I have run into this issue and the problem seems to be with what kind of USB port that the Unifying device is plugged into. If the USB is not 2.0 (1.0, 1.5, 3.0, 2.0/3.0 switched) the unifying device is seen by the kernel (lsusb reports its there), but the kernel does not set up the devices correctly for the keyboard to be used. The problem is that the base kernel 3.10.x had a bug in it that was fixed in later kernels. (3.15.5 ml works with any of the usb). A fix in upstream will need to be made so it works there.
